the good the bad and the ugly

christchurch

there is not a lot of good you can say about an earthquake  , there is a lot of good you can say about the way people stand up to a challenge.. the students of this country will make us proud .. after the september earthquake in Christchurch they started with a hand full of volunteers  to help clean up the city ..now , five month later , after another devastating quake they are a thousand strong  .. they are not there because they are paid to be , they are not there to sell papers , they are not there for the ratings they are there to help any way they can.. perhaps some of the media superstars can take a leaf out of their book … to feign anger at local officials  , who are dealing with their own personal issues as well there pubic duties , to get a sensational story and improve your ratings and persona is NOT journalism .. instead of the government thinking that we should charge interest on student loans to pay for the cost of the earthquake we should use the funding from TVNZ  NEWS… the students are the good, the earthquake was the bad and the media , THE UGLY!!!……..

census 2011

census

every 6 years we are told by the government that we have to fill out a census form or we will face criminal charges… i don’t like being told this so every 6 years i try to dodge it .. i just sign it , date it and hand it back .. name , rank and serial number… this goes down like a lead balloon with the volunteer dropping off and picking up the papers …. the volunteers insist that you fill out the entire form or face prosecution…. they have been trained to deal with people like me , but i am a stubborn bastard… they tell you that you have committed a criminal offence , if i am a criminal i have a right to remain silent and so it goes on like that….. in the end they take the papers and go.. there is a reason that i don’t like filling out these forms..  its information on me that business, members of the private sector , iwi etc can use to make money … they can make money by targeting people like me, the infomation defines a market for them without financal input … the taxpayer funds the census… if the infomation was only used by the government i may be inclined to fill out the forms…

let the games begin

it has already started , the excuses for not competing , and as i said in my last blog dengue fever has been in india since the dawn of time .. my grandfather went to india back in 52 and dengue was rife .. he was there  in an era that there were no controls over it , his party returned safe.. i think what is bugging me the most is the attitude that we are better than the india people and  it is arrogant to tell them that the best that they can do is not acceptable to us , then when the accommodation is found to be alright, use a disease as an excuse to pull out… it would appear to me that these sports people are looking for any reason to not go.. watching an interview on TV the other night the cyclist  , who was pulling out , took the entire interview to tell us the reason he was pulling out was dengue fever and the rest of the interview was fragmented and confusing , he just didn’t want to go and was looking for a way out that made him look like the aggrieved party …how would we react if rugby teams pulled out of next years world cup because we have one of the highest rates of meningitis in the world ? ……just go and enjoy the difference ,  millions of tourist do every year…………….

india

what kind of people expect to go to india and find it pristine .. as far back as i can remember there has been poverty , dengue fever , malaria  and Delhi belly .. listening to the news you would think all of this has just happened .. there is a bit of paint and saw dust on the floor of the accommodation , no difference to living in a house that is being renovated .. i think that the athletes are being a little precious ..when you go to india you should expect to find india ..  those who choose not to go can pay back the tax payer all they have received because when you cash the cheque you agree to deliver .. the tax payer is not the only one affected .. there are people behind the scenes that give their time  , away from their families , for the love of the sport .. who is going to tell them they were wasting their time ?
